I’m halfway through my Marketing internship at Publicis Pro, and it’s been an adventure… in a good way. Just 6 weeks ago I felt like a complete novice in this space, but I’m now at a point where things are starting to click. But as a recent graduate stepping into agency life full time, it’s definitely been an adjustment. New routines, new things to learn, and a team full of people who are so talented that, at times, I’ve definitely felt like the “new kid” trying to keep up. But the truth is that everyone here has been incredibly welcoming, supportive, and genuinely invested in helping me learn and adjust.
Since day one, I’ve been thrown into real work. I’ve helped launch Season 2 of the UnTrended podcast, supported the rollout of the UnTrended newspaper, and produced almost everything you see on the Publicis Pro social channels. It’s been exciting and nothing like the cliché of B2B being boring. If anything, I’ve already seen how much personality and humour goes into doing this kind of work well. What’s surprised me most is how collaborative everything is. Each team brings something unique to the table, and seeing how those perspectives merge has been one of the biggest learning curves.
But going back to this adjustment, being off the back of a summer where literally nothing mattered, I mean I visited 5 different countries and very briefly had nothing to worry about. But of course, reality hits you and I actually needed to do something with my life. Which brings me here (which I’m very grateful for). Work life after Uni is a shift no doubt, learning the language of the industry is one thing, and figuring out how to add value before anyone even asks is another. But it’s not rocket science, its manageable and everyone is there to support as they’ve been in my shoes themselves. And each week I can feel myself getting more confident in what I’m doing, more capable, and feeling more at home.
But to be honest although there’s challenges, I try to embrace them all and actually enjoy them. The only pet peeve is some of the characters I’m forced face during the commute, accompanied by delays which has certainly tested my patience. But that’s just how it is, and it’s worth it because working in London is pretty cool, and in an office that has all you need (e.g free breakfast).
In summary, after over a month in, I’m definitely growing, not just in skills but in how I see myself. I mean, the fact I’m even writing a blog about my thoughts and feelings probably says enough about how far I’ve come already. There’s obviously a lot more to learn, and by no means am I an experienced professional yet, but if this is what the beginning of my career looks like, I’d say I’m in exactly the right place.
